The last weekend I get the Big Stopper and the NISI ND1000 to compare them and I took some photos.
As you can see in the photos the NISI filter have a very accurate cast color doing nearly unnecessary any retouching in the white balancing.

I received today the NISI filters, and I have to say that the quality is awesome.
Hoy he recibido los filtros de la marca NISI y tengo que decir que la calidad es increíble.

This weekend I will test the filters roughly but today I get the ND1000 to take some photos and I have to say that this filter will be my definitely ND1000, not only because the color cast is nearly perfect, this filter have a simple detail that don't have any of the filters that I tested before (Lee Big Stopper, Haida, Benro) and it's very important, when the filter is fitted in the holder there aren't spaces between the filter and the holder in any of the sides.

Yesterday i visit Casanova Foto shop and they lent me the new Benro 4" filters and also a beautiful Benro holder to test it.
I don't know that this company was selling square filters but the first impression was a big surprise, the quality are extremely good and the aluminium holder have big surprises for the photographers.

The Benro filters will be available in Casanova Foto in July (www.casanovafoto.com).

It's difficult to found information about the thickness of our round filters because of that I created this chart with the two most famous filters brands, I hope it will be useful.

Note: The 3DPideas adapters are designed to fit with Slim polarizers. We are using as a reference the HOYA Pro 1 Digital (5mm).

Do you know the quality of NISI filters?
NISI is a young Chinese company that sell square and round filters and also his own aluminium holder.

They are using Scott glass like B&H or Haida, their thick filter design ring for the round filters are awesome and the filter catalog are huge, promising?

I will have some material from this company in a few days to do a review.... exciting....

If you want to see what this company offer, click in his logo.

Haida ND3.0 vs Lee Big Stopper

2/17/2014

Some time ago I used to shot with a B+W ND 3.0-1,000X SC round filter with spectacular results until it fall off to the ground... due to this I started to study the best alternative in the 100x100 size, because it allow me to use ND grads without any vignetting.

I have been searching for a square (100x100mm) ND3.0 filter and I found this list:
  • Formatt-Hitech Resin ProStop IRND 10 ($162.92)*
  • Lee Big Stopper ($187.00)*
  • Haida ND3.0 ($115) ebay

There are miles of reviews about the Lee Big Stopper and others filters, like the Hitech ND3.0, but now there are a new competitor in the filters sector, Haida, a Chinese company that are making high quality filters using Scott glasses (the same glass used by B+W) with a good price.

In will not to do an extensive or professional review
because I'm not an expert in filters.

Test equipment:
  • Canon 40D
  • Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
  • Compatible Lee holder
  • 3DPideas Lee adapter (see here)

I shot in a cloudy/rainy day with some sun rays once in a while, I know it was not the best day to test the filters.
The photos have been posted without any retouch, directly from the Adobe Camera Raw.

In the photos below you can see that the Lee (5950K) is cooler and the Hiada (5000K) is warmer, but not so warmer like the B+W round filter (see here) for my the photo have the perfect temperature with true colors.

In the next ones you can see a 100% crop of the images. I don't know if I'm wrong, but for my the Haida have a better definition.

And to finish an extreme b+w (yes, I love the exploded sky)...

Well, for my is very clear, if you want an excellent glass, buy the Haida filter.

In the next links you can download the raw files if anyone want to analyze the photos.
